Finding Your Real Nakshatra

Each nakshatra covers 13°20′ of the zodiac, and the Moon moves through roughly one of them each day. That is why your true nakshatra needs your birth time and place, not just the date: two people born on the same day can have different birth stars.

If you know your birth details, a panchang or a qualified astrologer can tell you your actual nakshatra. Many families also use it to choose the first syllable of a baby's name. On this page, treat the result as a way to get to know the 27 names, from Ashwini to Revati.

How This Game Picks the Stars, and What Kundli Matching Checks

This tool counts how many days into the year each birth date falls, starting from 0 on 1 January, and divides by 27. The remainder picks the name in order: 1 January gives Ashwini, 2 January Bharani, and the list starts again after Revati, so 28 January is Ashwini once more and 1 February is Mrigashira. The score then comes only from the two star names, never from your own names, so two couples born on the same dates get the same percentage.

In a traditional Ashtakoot match, the real nakshatra matters in several of the eight kootas. Tara compares the count from one birth star to the other (3 points); Yoni gives each nakshatra an animal symbol and checks how well the two animals get on (4 points); Gana sorts the stars into Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa temperaments (6 points); and Nadi places each star in one of three groups, with the same Nadi traditionally treated as a concern (8 points).

Each nakshatra is also split into four padas, giving 108 quarters in all, and that pada is what links a birth star to the syllables used in naming. In mythology the 27 nakshatras are the daughters of Daksha and wives of the Moon, which is why the Moon's position decides your birth star. None of these details can be worked out from a calendar date alone.

The day of the year of each birth date (0-365) mod 27 picks one of the 27 nakshatra names. The two nakshatra names give a CRC32 seed; score = 55 + (seed mod 46), so 55-100%.

What it can't tell you

Real nakshatras depend on the Moon's exact position at the time and place of birth; this tool uses only the calendar day, so it will usually not match your actual nakshatra.
